Staying Put

Today we had the opportunity to look at a house to rent. We currently live in an apartment. It’s officially 861 square feet. It’s not breaking a world record or anything, but it is a small home for three people. This new rental house would almost double our space for just about $100 more than what we’re paying in rent. A tempting offer.

At the end of the day, we decided to stay in our apartment. The funny thing is that a year ago we spent a lot of time deciding if we should stay here or move into a house. Because that’s what people do when they have a baby, right? We’ve lived here for three years, and we’re about to commit to the fourth year. I really didn’t think we would stay this long, but each year our apartment fits us better, and I am happy with it.

It took effort to make our apartment into how we wanted it. Just last month we did a massive closet clean out, sold a few things on Craigslist, and donated a carload of clothes and stuff. I focused on cleaning out junk during the whole month of January. Now the amount of stuff that we have is nicely balanced to the amount of space available.

I do think we will want a house at some point. We like to talk about how it will be. But I think we will wait. The invitation to view this rental house was nice, but it’s also pretty nice to be settled into a place for a while. It feels like home.
