  1. Great blog – I love that GRS posts useful blogs from all over – I’ve added you to my favorites. Might have to give the ‘No Spend Month’ a try, but with gas prices so high this year, did you have to adjust your budget?

  2. Hi Jen, thanks so much. We did increase our budget for higher gas prices. Last year our budget for the month was $200, this year it’s $250. (We actually spent less on gas this year simply by staying home more.)

To set the total budget for No Spend Month, I thought about our normal food budget, which is usually around $300 a month. I discounted it since I had some food in the pantry already, and then I added more for gas. We thought that if we made this amount cover everything for ourselves, then we would really have to make careful choices. It has definitely helped us to think differently about our spending habits.

  3. Wow Rachel – congratulations – it’s very deserved, your blog is wonderful :)

  4. Cool blog. I can’t imagine living on $250 for one month. I actually started tracking all of my expenses. I began doing that this month, July. I’ve already spent over $1,500 (this includes rent, cable, phone, internet). But even after paying that, I find that I spend a lot of money on take-out and snacks. After this month is over, I am going to have to sit down and really evaluate how I’m living my life. I’ll continue to come to this site for ideas. Thank you!

  5. Well, I can definitely use all the ideas and encouragement I can get, so I’m looking forward to playing catch-up on your blog. Thanks for sharing!

  6. We came over from GRS and really like what we see so far. We’ll look forward to checking back often!

  7. Congrats Rachel – what a treat I am sure! love your site and what you have to share with your readers.

  8. What a beautiful blog! I love the design — it manages to be clean and simple and somehow lush at the same time. How excellent of JD to have clued us to this!

Wow…$250 for a month. I do no-spend days, but a whole no-spend month would be altogether beyond my skills! It looks like you exclude utilities and other unavoidable monthly bills, but even at that, it would be a miracle if I could eat for $250, to say nothing of drive to work and keep the hovel running. I’m impressed!

  9. Congratulations!!!

I read Get Rich Slowly every-so-often but I know that they have a great community there. It’s awesome and well deserved that you’re being recognized by them! :-p

Blog on I say! Blog on….

  10. Congrats to you! What a huge boost in visibility. You are a gem. I’m glad others can find you, too!

  11. No spend month – I’ve tried it over the past year with mixed success. With August 1st right around the corner, I’m going to give it my all. I’ve already informed the family that’s it’s sort of a “competition with ourselves” and it’ll be a great exercise in self discipline!

  12. Thanks everybody, and I appreciate your reading and comments!

  13. Hi! I popped over from GRS. I always like finding interesting blogs, especially when they are by close-to-home bloggers. I’ll definitely be back to keep up with ya. Ciao!

Congrats on the honorable mention. I’ve been reading your blog since just after you started your no spend month. I want to thank you for the inspiration, and the helpful hints. My boyfriend and I are getting ready to move in together, and we could sure use all the help we can get!

I’ve been trying to curb my -I just need one more thing- around the house as well for the last half year. It’s rough!!! After I read some of the things you’ve mentioned about shopping, I sat down and did some math. Can’t believe how much I spend on little things, like toilet lid covers, and expensive soaps.

Well the month is over, and I’d like to say congrats for your hard work this whole month. Go buy yourself some more cherries.

    Thanks again,

  15. Awesome! Congrats…

  16. Thanks for the nice welcome! I’m not quite ready for the No-Spend-Month, but I’l keep reading, and I am sure I’ll get there. Thanks for all the great tips!

  17. Congratulations!

  18. Rachael, thanks for the great welcome. I look forward to catching up on the posts that I have missed. I have recently made the decision to make some drastic changes in my life, so all the encouragement I can get will be great.
