Good Reads: the So Thankful for a Quiet Night Edition

We put up our Christmas decorations — next week I’ll get to show you pictures!

Lane was sick today, so right now I’m enjoying the peace and stillness of the night while she sleeps.

Before I was a mom, I never knew that one sick child could create so many loads of laundry in just a few hours. I didn’t know that I wouldn’t care about getting thrown up on. I didn’t know how much I could do with so little sleep.

We’re going to take it easy this weekend. We want to stay home, so I think a Christmas film festival is exactly what we need.

Here’s a little reading for this weekend:

Keep Our Lives Simple

  • Advent Conspiracy — Have you seen this two minute video yet? It’s definitely worth watching.

Nurture Our Loved Ones

Learn Practical Skills

Make Smart Money Decisions

Enjoy Peace

What is your favorite Christmas movie? I think mine might be Christmas Vacation. The scene where Chevy is dressed in trunk clothes watching family movies in the attic gets me every time.

  1. I loved every. last. link in this post. Thank you! I hope Lane feels better, and that laundry goes very quickly for you!

We just saw Fred Claus, which I really liked, and then there’s Love, Actually, but my all-time favorite is It’s a Wonderful Life- my husband and I had the opportunity to perform in the stage version a few years ago, and had a blast.

  2. Hi Rachel,
Being sick is never fun. We had it going around our house last weekend. Hope Lane is feeling all better quickly, and no one else get sick.
Thanks for the link (and really, for highlighting Jennifer – from Principles for Peace, as the guest writer). I appreciate it very much.

  3. Hi Rachel, you’re so right, there are so many things having a child teaches you about yourself….especially how much you appreciate a quite peaceful night :) I hope Lane is all well now.

    I love Christmas Vacation too..

  4. I hope your sick baby feels better, my daughter has a terrible cold right now and it just breaks my heart.

I love A Muppet Christmas Carol and a Charlie Brown Christmas … so cute.

  5. I’m so sorry Lane is sick!

My very favorite christmas movie is a kitschy jim henson muppet one from the 70’s called “Emmit Otter’s Jug Band Christmas” it’s a gift of the maji remake, of sorts, and just so sweet and perfect. I found an ancient video of it at a thrift shop several years ago for 50 cents, and it’s by far the best thrift shop score I’ve ever had!

  6. Love, Actually is my favorite Christmas movie. I need to watch it soon!

I love the photo on this post. I swear you make me want a daughter!

  7. I am so sorry that Lane is sick. There is nothing as heart-breaking as having a sick child.

Our family’s favorite Christmas movie is easly Christmas Vacation. We also enjoy watching it in the Summer! Another favorite is A Christmas Story.

  8. A Christmas Story is one of my favorites. This year I want to watch While You Were Sleeping again; it’s set around Christmas. If you want to see a sweet movie with beautiful snowy scenery, watch The Christmas Card. I love it. It’s a Hallmark movie, so don’t expect Chekhov or anything.

Through Advent Conspiracy, my church will help build a home for abandoned children in India and expand a shelter for women in crisis and their children in Southern California. It’s exciting!

    Hope Lane feels better soon.

  9. ahh puke, I always puke after I have my kids settled back down again, it’s gross.

I think Christmas Vacation is my favorite movie too! I love that attic scene too, it kills me when he falls through the floor! I think I might watch that tonight

  10. Poor little Lane. Hope today is better!

Christmas Vacation – always and absolutely. “WHY is the carpet all wet, TODD?” “I don’t KNOW, MARGOT!!!!” Oh my gosh. never get tired of that one.

Thanks for the awesome links. I’m starting a project file for next year, too. :)

  11. So sorry your little one is under the weather. :( At least it’s unlikely she’ll be sick again for Christmas. I’d rather have a cold the first week of December than Christmas Day. :)

Thanks for the link! Enjoy your film festival!

Christmas Vacation is my mom’s favorite Christmas movie, it reminds her a lot of her family (they’re all just a little bit nuts :-P).
I personally love White Christmas and The Santa Clause. White Christmas gets me teared up every time.
I hope Lane is feeling better soon! She’s too cute to be sick :-P

  15. i hope she feels better!

  16. I hope Lane feels better soon and I can’t wait to see your decorations.´s last blog post..A Mug of Hot Chocolate Cake

  17. I have 2 favorites — Love Actually and A Christmas Story. I watch them over and over every year. I guess I really have more favorites than two because I also like to watch Charlie Brown and Rudolph; maybe that’s because I have fond memories of them from my childhood.

Hope Lane is feeling better and that you’ve caught up on laundry and sleep!

  19. Hope your little one is fully recovered!

My not-so-little-one (15 years old, 6 ft. tall) woke this A.M. with a stomach virus/102 fever – and the laundry has been going all day.

I have been lucky though, in almost 18 years of being a Mom, this is a first for this type of illness.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that it is limited to just one family member, but based on childhood memories, I think we are all doomed.

  20. I’d like to say that you always provide clear information and i have been an avid reader of your site for quite a while. Just wanted to thank you really for all beneficial financial work you do!
