Apartment Adventures

When we found out we were expecting our first baby, we decided to stay in our one bedroom apartment instead of moving somewhere bigger. When we found out we were expecting our second baby, it was definitely time to move.

We still want to live in an apartment because the prices in this city make buying a house not worth it to us.

We thought (briefly) about buying a house in the suburbs, but they are all so big, and we didn’t want to have a bunch of new furnishings for the extra space. We like living in a small place together.

We looked for apartments, and we found one. It was glamorous. A high-rise building with lots of glass and architectural interest, and tons of restaurants and shops surrounding it.

It would have been perfect…if it was about four years ago. It was on the top side of our budget, but Doug negotiated a third off the rent for a two year commitment. Everything seemed to be falling into place. It would have been perfect…if it was about four years ago.

We realized later that it wasn’t the right place for a toddler and a new baby. We wouldn’t be able to go out to the restaurants for late suppers. Trips to the park would require a long walk down a busy street. It was great for the life we used to have, but not for the life we have (and love) right now.

We found another apartment, and last week we signed the lease. This one is not so glamorous, but it’s brand new. It has new efficient appliances. There are several small parks within an easy walk. It has two bedrooms, and both have big closets!

I am so excited about the closets. It even has a pantry cabinet, so all of our groceries will fit in the kitchen!

There’s a lot of beige, but I think it will look like home once we move our stuff in. We’ve been thinking about floor plans and storage. We’ll move at the end of March — plenty of time.

So that’s our plan, and as I get used to the idea, I think it will be great.

  1. Can’t wait to see pictures and to watch you turn the new place into an elegant-yet-cozy nest. I confess…you got me! I felt a twinge of envy at the description of the “glamorous” apartment. Sigh. You and Doug are so very wise. Glad you’ve found a place to fit all four of you!

jill´s last blog post..You know I HAD to have this.

  2. Congratulations on finding a new place!
We found a new (rental) apartment and we’re so glad we took it. It has two bedrooms and although we don’t have kids (yet) I work from home, so it helps. However, I think we’ll stay here even after the first kid. This is such a nice place and the rent is a-m-a-z-i-n-g.
Also, being new means you don’t feel like you’re living in someone else’s home.

  3. Good Luck in your new apartment. I admire people who can make it work. My husband and I need a lawn/backyard. When we moved to Florida almost 3 years ago we rented a bungalow with our two daughters. We hated constantly being on top of each other. Even my oldest daughter complained about the space. Now we have our own house which is fantastic for us.

  6. Oh wow, this sounds so exciting – all the decisions to made and getting sorted out in a new spot! Lovely… I can’t wait to read about it!

  7. Sounds like everything is falling into place for you. That is so exciting. Congratulations on the new place!

Plus, I think you are right that big houses are a bit overrated. We moved into a bigger house, which was good for us because we now have three kids, and we all fit comfortably but snugly. However, the downside is that it takes more time to keep clean and tidy, and ironically with three kids I have less time for such things. I long for my old townhouse sometimes which was quite small but much quicker to clean. Of course, if we were all piled on top of each other I probably wouldn’t like that either.

As the saying goes, for every good there is a bad.

  8. Glamorous is rarely worth it, especially when considering diaper pails and pureed carrots. Happy to hear you’ve got closets! We downsized recently, but our new apt has HUGE closets. I think big closets make it all worthwhile!

  15. Josh and I often lament not being able to indulge our urban loft fantasies. It is so important to be able to get outside quickly and easily with little children and your comment about not be able to actually GO to any of the chic and wonderful restaurants that are such a great part of urban living really struck home with me. We all certainly make concessions because we have kids but they won’t be little forever (happily?/sadly?) and I’ll have my loft someday : )

  18. Best of luck preparing for the move and making your new place your home. As we begin prepping our new house and slowly move from our tiny apartment into more than double the space I sometimes think about how much I’ll miss my husband since we won’t be living in as close quarters as we have for so long. But then he starts working on that one song that I’ve heard for the millionth time, or plays his electric drums 3 feet from me while I watch TV and I’m glad we’ll have some more room to live, ha.

  19. Good luck in your move! It was crazy enough to move into our apartment when we got married, I want to put off moving again for as long as possible. :-P
One way to personalize a lot of beige are the Wall Words you can get that don’t damage paint, it really brings a lot of personality to an otherwise boring area (especially if you can find ones in a native language like Gaelic).

  20. We had that glamourous apartment in the sky with one small quiet child but (as I said before) we couldn’t do it with two. :)

Glad you found something that will keep you happy. Looking forward to photos. Enjoy the moving process. I loved packing and decluttering the last time we moved.

  21. CONGRATS! Can’t wait to see pictures. I know you’ll have it looking glamoursly chic in no time.

I completely identify with your “not the right season” home dreams. We love sprawling old homes with lots of stairs and twists and turns. Not so great for the toddler years though. Maybe someday. *sigh*

  22. Yay Congratulations!!!

  23. Congratulations!!! I would love to see photos of your new place!

  24. Congratulations on finding a new home!
I’m sure it will look beautiful once you move in and add your family touches to it :)

  27. Congrats! Have fun preparing for the move and the settling in phase…it’s a bit trying, especially with little people or an expecting mama, but it is a fun & exciting time too. A fresh start is always exciting to me, anyways. :-)
