Back Room Makeover: Procrastinating

The back room still looks much the same as it did a couple of weeks ago. I blink and a week goes by!

I did learn something very important:

If you want to complete several house projects, plan to work on something big and unappealing. Suddenly you will feel motivated to do all sorts of other jobs instead!

What we’ve been finishing (and a preview of what you’ll see on Small Notebook in February…)

Not to mention keeping up with this…

How I love the weekend!

May you have a happy weekend too.

  1. You’re so normal! The backroom will get done eventually…what’s the hurry? Enjoy your family!!!

  2. Isn’t that always the case. I have a basement playroom project I should be working on today and I have done laundry, dishes, and general clean up around the house. I just don’t have the motivation to do the basement. I know how you feel. You’ll get that burst of energy and get it done and wonder why you just didn’t do it to begin with.

  4. I’m so busy blinking that I’m already into February!

I live in Virginia, where we just got hit with 31″ of snow! After some outside time, I began looking around all the rooms in our townhouse.

A tape measure, hammer and hacksaw in the kitchen? Yea, I was a little lazy getting them back to the garage.

The kids took out ALL of their toys. Um…my living area looks like Toys R Us exploded.

Lastly, I am currently eyeballing the vacuum that I brought up a week ago to use upstairs.

I have LOTS to do to keep busy!

    Have a great weekend! :)

  6. This is such a great post and so encouraging!!! I think mom’s in general should give themselves more of a break… regardless of the media hype to do more, be more. Mothering is 24/7, you can’t go home at the end of the day and we need to just give ourselves the space we need to be the best we can be. Really great post!!!

  7. Just don’t mind that last comment – I am battling with bandwidth and my comments are flying everywhere… but not all in the intended direction…

So what I meant to say to you (!!!) that in an attempt to clear out our back room this week – all inspired by your post and the fact that you could achieve this Herculean task before I even comprehend mine… I cleaned out all our kitchen cupboards, all the drawers in our entrance way, the school dresser, tackled the hedge… I could go on!!! But I never set foot in that back room!!!

I did write a post all about “I am NOT doing nothing…” in response to this situation… http://www.se7en.org.za/2010/02/03/se7en-is-not-doing-nothing-and-a-new-to-do-list You might like to take a look!!! Have a great weekend.

It’s nice to know I’m not the only one with a room like that (okay…rooms). It’s also nice to know that I’m not the only one who procrastinates with suddenly critical tasks like dusting the coils behind my fridge.
Thanks for the reassurance that I’m (somewhat)normal.

  9. We just had a Rummage Sale at church this weekend. It may not be clean in my store room, but at least we purged it of lots of stuff. What’s one man’s trash is another man’s treasure! Someday, I’ll actually get it organized. I think I hear Judy Garland sining in the background…

  10. I totally agree with Imani “enjoy your family”.

If you still feel the need to deal with this room, follow along with Flylady during the month of February and spend 15 minutes a day decluttering this room.

    Don’t make yourself crazy.

  11. Isn’t it funny (not) how we find anything and everything else to do besides the one thing we have determined to do. My computer calls to me at the most inconvenient times. Gotta work on that. Thanks.

  12. Oh my gosh – I can totally relate. My living room desperately needs a paint job, but first I have to fix the cracking drywall paint… so, I’ve been moving furniture, de-cluttering, and pretty much everything else I can think of that doesn’t have to do with drywall. I figure if I’m getting work done around the house, it’s all good!

  13. I don’t know anybody who can’t relate! I have a buncha stuff I need to sell on Craig’s List and I just can’t get my act together to do it! I think I’ll do my old trick of inviting my friends over for “drinks” and mention a few things that I could use help with. That group of crafty chicas couldn’t stand bad pics or lighting and the job would be done before I knew it! Do you have someone you can invite over who isn’t invested in your stuff to help?

  15. My whole house looks like your back room right now – and usually does I will admit. Dirty diaper laundry and 4 hungry little tummies call me much louder than messes! I miss an organized house, but there will be a time when my house is clean and I will miss the kids instead.

  16. My house and blog have been neglected for a few days, but my husband was packed and prepared for his trip to Florida. So, today was the first day back in the saddle and wouldn’t you know it …there are about 30 loads of laundry to do…(ok maybe exaggerrated)..but more than one load always seems like 30 to me anyway!! LOL!

  18. Ha! So true. Sadly, my big, unappealing project is…..the laundry. My kitchen will be spotless, projects finished, floor mopped, and new projects started. But when my kids ask where their school uniforms are…?

“Look in the pile on the couch in mommy’s room. Just like always.”

Sigh. Even Superman had is Kryptonite. ;-)

  19. I think everyone has a “junk drawer” I’ve got a ROOM…a whole space designated for items that have no home. I swear one day I will get up enough nerve to just throw some of the stuff out before my kids send pictures to Hoarders.

Very excited by the light fitting that I see her…looking forward to that being unveiled!

Good luck with the back room – have no doubt you’ll get there in the end.

  21. Just wanted to pop in and tell you that I empathize. We are fortunate enough to have a nice big attic to store our “stuff” in. Teh downside is that we use it as an excuse to not have to make decisions about stuff…just send it to the attic!
We’ve been slowly trying to get rid of stuff, and I’ll tell you, it is just so overwhelming! Today we took a trunkload of stuff to Goodwill. Honestly, you wouldn’t even know it by looking at our attic. But hey, it’s something, right?

  22. Wow! I am sooooo glad I am not alone in this. I am tackling my little closet in baby steps and hope to be done by mid-April. LOL Between work and tending to my 2 kids, hubby and dog, it’s hard to find the time to get in there and really work. Maybe break the task down into little bits and that way you feel that you’re making progress but also get to spend that all-important time with your family.

  23. Isn’t it funny how things happen like that? I have been discussing re-arranging / organizing my shoes and mentioned it in an email to a friend. She replied back days later and innocently asked how the shoe thing went and I had to admit that I had done NOTHING. But you know, I organized the shoes that night! Nothing like a little accountability…

You’ll get that back room done – your blog will force you to! ;)
