Small Notebook’s 3 Year Anniversary (and Giveaway of Simple Blogging)

I just realized that it’s been three years since I started writing here at Small Notebook.

3 years.

This blog has seen 3 apartments, a new kid, a few good makeovers, confessions, and good laughs. And even including the times when I totally broke my blog trying to do some upgrade or whatever, I’ve had a really good time.

I was looking through old posts, and oh my goodness did we talk about a lot this past year. Do you remember these?

A Guide to Imperfect, But Clean, Laundry

Make Home a Haven With Personal Filters

Simplify Your Stuff: Choose the Classics

How I Broke a 30-Year Caffeine and Soda Addiction

How an Ugly Couch Made My Marriage Better

and we organized our undies too: Too Many Spares? Simplify Your Pairs

It’s been great to have you here to talk with because I really do believe that we’re changing lives one laundry load at a time. Without you this blog would be meaningless, and to thank you for three good years, I want to offer 6 copies of my ebook Simple Blogging.

I wrote Simple Blogging last year to answer the question I hear so often: “I love blogging, but how do I manage the time that it takes?” It’s a solution for the nights when you think you need to stay up ’til 2 a.m. and how to deal with guilt from all those unanswered emails.

With blogging I’ve learned two critical lessons: (1) not to place too much importance on what other people say about me, whether it be praise or criticism, and (2) blogging can take a ton of time, if you let it. Everything I’ve learned so far about how to write a helpful, relevant blog in a minimum amount of free time is included in the 17 chapters of Simple Blogging. It also features advice from the smart women who are behind these well-known blogs: Nesting PlaceThe Happiness ProjectSimple MomInspired to ActionOwlhavenMade by Rae, and Life…Your Way.

You can even read the first chapter for free.

This blog is brought to you by an old Italian wall socket, an adapter to change the small Italian pins to the slightly bigger European size, an adapter to switch the European pins to a North American outlet, a MacBook power adapter, and one yellow flowery couch.

A huge thanks to you for being here. If you would like to win one of the six free copies of Simple Blogging, just write a comment on this post before Monday, March 7 at 11:00 p.m. (CST).

Congratulations to Cate, Rana, Jackie, Julianna, Heidi, and Sheri for winning a copy of Simple Blogging, and thanks to all of you who commented on this post with such encouragement. I appreciate you so much!

  17. Your blog has been such a wonderful resource to me! In fact, the first time I read it, I immediately called my mom and got her on your site too because it’s so much like her and the tips and tricks she likes to read and share.

Great giveaway! I blog but it’s put to the bottom of my list and I usually post during breaks at work (when I should be looking at anything other than a computer screen!) or in the evenings (when I should be hanging out with my family!) so I would love to win a copy of your book. The first chapter I read was already relevant to me!

  22. I discovered your blog when I attempted to start my own “simple” focused blog. And I was overjoyed to find you because you seem to have already written everything I was hoping to communicate through mine (& so much more)! So you saved me a lot of work and frustration because only God knows if I ever actually would have gotten all my thoughts out there ;-)

Funny thing is as I started making my way through your archives I read a post that seemed very familiar about casein intolerance – and discovered a comment I had written over a year ago! I was so excited about that post because no one talks about casein intolerance. But I never bothered to look at the rest of your blog (sorry!).

Anyway, I’ve been eyeing your ebook, too. I think I might have a solid blog someday… Just haven’t found the right niche yet to really capture my passion and attention.

Thanks again for all you do here. I absolutely love it! (I also have a feeling I may have written a similar comment before, so forgive my forgetfulness if so…)

  52. Happy 3 years!

I like the last paragraph/picture. I almost failed the electrical course I took in second year university. I remember almost a year later, looking lazily at the power cord for my computer and thinking “I wonder if that’s a transformer” (it is… changes the wall voltage to the voltage the computer uses.)

  77. I would love a copy of Simple Blogging!
Last December, our son suggested I start blogging. At that point, I thought bloggers were people who left the *#@! comments below news articles. I discovered a whole new world! I’m having as much fun reading great blogs (like yours) as I am writing my own at I post about the journey of learning to travel lighter through life: weight loss, exercise, simplifying, my home-building business (my take on being a home-maker) and a lot of whatevers.
Thank you for your encouragement and your example. Congratulations of your three successful years!

Congratulations and I do enjoy your site. I hope that you have made blogging simpler than what you have to do to connect! As for me…well, I am in the market for a retirement project – one a little different from conquering bread-making, which is still #1 on my “while at home” list.

  82. It would be great to win this book. I have to discipline myself so hard to put the most important things (like family) first before escaping to bloggy land. It’s so tempting to give up if you can’t do it really well but maybe you can help me solve the conundrum.

I’ve only discovered your blog in the last month but have never explored so much back catalogue on another blog. It’s awesome! Here’s to another 3 years!

  83. I love the idea of a blog, but often feel overwhelmed about what to write. Unfortunately, unless I think the topic is interesting, I get writer’s block. Luckily our family isn’t soda drinkers but iced tea was always the drink with dinner. Now I drink lots of water & still have the occassional hot green tea w/ raw honey in the morning. I’ve also been on mission to drastically reduce our sodium intake, eat more local produce & less processed foods. It’s amazing how great you feel when you make serious lifestyle changes. :)

  92. Congrats on three years!

  93. I only discovered your blog yesterday, thanks to a link in a “ravelry” group. It’s a really great find! OI’d love to be in for a chance to win your e-book, especially as I have only just started my own blogs (yes, I went from zero to two of them in the space of a day!!)

  111. hi – i’d like to introduce myself as i have been reading your blog “anonomously” without posting a comment for a few months now… i resonate on many levels (not to mention i am an apple nut and love dropbox and evernote)… that aside to make a long story short – ok very short – on 12/20 i fell down the escalator at nordstroms and by 1/11/11 (my favorite number) my boss reduced my time to part time status (for a while)… in the interim many gifts with “cruddy” wrapping paper also appeared… and i decided on 1/17/11 that this was going to be the year i make many changes of which one was to “refresh” my perspectives, my thoughts, my house, my paper, my calender, my time – just about everything…i got simple blogging for some reason (wink) in december and really like it.. i’ve done all the domain registrations – and have yet to write a word…there’s alot more – just wanted to chime in and say hi..

  112. Oh Boy! I would LOVE a copy of your book. I also love your blog. There are only a few blogs that I recommend to others and your is one! Well Jessica and Doug, from Old Doug in BC Canada whose 62nd anniversary happens to be today. March 4 1949 was the day we two tied the knot, never in our wildest dreams back then thinking we would still be around today! But here we still are, still in love and both still alive. And as Marie has a new pacemaker New Years Eve at 8 AM, she should be good for quite a few more yet! Dunno if I will be, however who knows? We both have enjoyed your blog for all three of these years! Have many more, and I know you are having fun in Italy.

  135. Hi,

I came across your blog a couple of months ago and absolutely love the tips and what not that you post. I find that I can really relate to many of your posts, advice and tips when thinking about things for my home and children. I’m always telling my husband about the blog, and even spent some time on craigslits trying to find a library catalogue because I absolutely love what you’ve done with yours! I post many of your posts on my facebook profile and have mentioned your blog to numerous friends. I would love to win a copy of your book especially because I started a blog about education after my son was born, but havent been able to get back to it and it’s been two years! Thank you again for the great tips and advice.

  136. My, my. Can you believe I’ve been reading for two and a half of those three years? We have not moved in that time but there have been cast iron cookware purchases and paper pile makeovers and even fewer pairs of undies at my house thanks to your inspiration!! I would love to win a copy!

  146. What a timely post/giveaway. I’ve been grappling with the question – to blog or not to blog for several months now. I was first introduced to the seemingly endless fountain of information and virtual connections found through blogging by my mother. Yes, I admit, it’s a little sad that my mom beat me to the punch in discovering this, but hey – at least I got the satisfaction of knowing how to utilize RSS feeds before her! Anyway, as I started to notice the theme of the types of blogs I was subscribing to and the fact that many of them were interlinked with each other – I started wondering what my own voice could contribute to the conversation. The blogs I follow are authored by women who share one or more of the following attributes: they love God wholeheartedly, they are passionate about their families, they have an obsession with organization and any kind of storage solution, beauty is not lost on their finely-tuned senses – they find it in everyday living, and most importantly, they desperately desire to have their writings touch and impact other women in a way that glorifies God and builds up the body of Christ. Several weeks ago, I stumbled across the website for the blogging conference, The Relevant Conference. I could hardly contain myself when I learned that these women gather each year for encouragement, fellowship, technical training, and networking! I immediately wanted to sign up to join – but, then this one tiny issue came rushing to the surface…ready for it? Yeah, I don’t blog. I’m a closet-blogger – that is, I have a blog (two, actually), but it’s not public and I think I have 1.5 posts. Hmmm – that could be a problem. So, here I am – investigating the next steps, deciphering if I have anything different or beneficial to add to the conversation, and figuring out the best way to move forward. Your book sounds like it would be an incredible resource to help me in that path!

  147. Congrats on your 3rd anniversary :) I would love a copy of Simple Blogging. I’m a newbie to this and I think getting some tips on how to manage my blog time would be really useful.

  148. Congratulations! You have definitely inspired me on my journey toward journaling and blogging more earnestly.

  210. Lovely to hear that you’ve made it three years and counting, keep it up and hopefully I get to win the book :)

  211. I think that is amazing to have blogged for 3 years.
Your blog is the 2nd one I have been following for over a year. The first one has since been deleted from my email list.
I like the relevance of the topics you write about and in a sense its like having girlfriends in another part of the world to natter with. But we deal with similar issues no matter where you live on this earth.

Admire your tenacity and commitment to your blog.

Do you find it hard to comment on things?
Are there days you feel like not writing?

I am a journal writer, love putting pen to paper and started writing poetry when I was 14. Entries from early as 1984 so if I can start counting….27 years commenting on the comings and goings of boyfriends, friends, clothes but mostly boys. Talk about angst.
So good being a wiser model now.

    Good luck and happy adventures…

  212. Thanks a lot for this blog. It has given us great – I dare say, life saving – tips, like batch cooking and the “don’t buy it” idea.
    Much love,

Ps: Please count me out of the run for your e-book, already bought it :)

  213. I came across your blog several weeks ago & I’ve been completely hooked. I’ve been trying to reduce the sheer amount of ‘stuff’ I own & your writing is not only helpful, but also encouraging. Hope you’ve having a fabulous time in Italy. Keep blogging.
